The old adage of everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not entitled to their own set of facts, has gone by the wayside and expectedly, it is wreaking havoc upon political discourse as there is seemingly no longer agreed-upon facts nor reality by the nation’s body politic.
This cannot be a pleasant time to be an educator or a parent at this time. How does one teach the past four years and how does one teach the morality of truth, especially at a time when the vast majority of Republicans/conservatives say they believe that the current president was illegitimately elected.
We can credit Kellyanne Conway for the introduction of “alternative facts” into this equation, though it is her ex-boss, who has taken his base to this absurd alternative universe in which thousands upon thousands of demonstrable lies are not lies at all, and his base, like lemmings, goes along. Common sense would tell us that he, being the consummate conman that he has always been, has either conned his clueless “base,” or they are also in on the con.
Normally what an ex-president does or thinks is of little consequence to the nation/world, but his delusions — of having triumphed in the 2020 election — have carried over months after his resounding defeat. Whether his base believes that or not, they are publicly repeating that fiction with a vengeance, especially against heretics, i.e., Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney, etc. Actually, because of Jan. 6, it isn’t simply about repeating lies, which was normalized during the previous administration, but about an ongoing insurrection.
This is actually the precipice we find ourselves in today; was there or was there not a Jan. 6 insurrection, with the expressed intent to disrupt the 2020 election results? If yes, the question the country has to answer, is whether the ex-president was its ringleader? That’s an easy answer. In any other country, such a scenario would have serious consequences. But the nation’s (non-Republican) body politic does not appear to want to rattle the ex-president’s nest, perhaps for fear of an outright civil war.
Truthfully, we’ve long been in an undeclared civil war, though really, this is not a matter of both sides being engaged or simple “whataboutism.” On its face, it actually appears to be a white supremacist/misogynistic revolt, with the Republican Party and “conservative” ideology providing cover for such a revolt. Its primary elements are opposition to civil/human rights, and the right to vote (Trump voter suppression laws).
Some have long described this conflict as a civilizational war, whereas others have described it as a battle over the future and soul and ideals of the nation. Some simply see it as a rhetorical battle over the meaning of words.
A word battle seems to be the least of the above named battles or wars and yet, how does the nation dialogue when one side invents new meanings to words or misconstrues ideas and by so doing, denies reality?
On this topic, what is instructive is the COVID crisis; the then-president told Bob Woodward that he understood early on, the severity of the pandemic, but that he publicly denied it and continued to do so because he believed the masses would panic. Apparently, such a rationale can justify any lie, or thousands of lies, in the interest of maintaining “law and order.” But those lies, or that “strategy,” has had extremely deadly consequences as we approach 600,000 deaths. His public pandemic denials has led to vaccine hesitancy, with Republicans/conservatives most likely to believe in vaccine conspiracies, etc, again, with the deadliest of consequences.
In a sense, this is where the issue of mass shootings are related. No matter how many mass casualty shootings, there continues to be a call to arms by the same political sector. They fiercely fight for the right to own the most lethal weapons — for hunting humans — because they appear to be preparing for racial war, though they invoke loftier terms, such as that civilizational war or the (white) west vs the “invading” hordes of brown and black savages.
Those weapons — under the guise of protecting the second amendment and thus freedom — have to be protected at all costs and is what stands between God-ordained civilization and savagery. This explains why evangelicals have always stood behind the ultimate con man, the most ungodly, most amoral and most corrupt President in modern US history. They too have a stake in this madness: heaven on earth.
For the rest of the country, this madness can only be fought with the morality of truth. That’s the whole point of blurring its meaning. Yet the truth is, the ex-president was landslided in 2016 and 2020. And 2024 would be no different, especially if he’s in prison or no longer alive.

El viejo adagio de que todos tienen derecho a sus propias opiniones, pero no a su propio conjunto de hechos, se ha quedado en el camino y, como era de esperar, está causando estragos en el discurso político, ya que aparentemente ya no hay hechos ni realidad acordados por parte de el cuerpo político de la nación.
Este no puede ser un momento agradable para ser un educador o un padre en este momento. ¿Cómo se enseña los últimos cuatro años y cómo se enseña la moralidad de la verdad, especialmente en un momento en que la gran mayoría de republicanos / conservadores dicen que creen que el presidente actual fue elegido ilegítimamente?
Podemos dar crédito a Kellyanne Conway por la introducción de "hechos alternativos" en esta ecuación, aunque es su exjefe, quien ha llevado su base a este absurdo universo alternativo en el que miles y miles de mentiras demostrables no son mentiras en absoluto, y su base, como los animales lemmings, sigue. El sentido común nos diría que él, siendo el consumado estafador que siempre ha sido, ha engañado a su "base" despistada, o ellos también están en la estafa.
Normalmente, lo que hace o piensa un ex presidente tiene pocas consecuencias para la nación / el mundo, pero sus delirios, de haber triunfado en las elecciones de 2020, se han prolongado meses después de su rotunda derrota. Ya sea que su base lo crea o no, están repitiendo públicamente esa ficción con una venganza, especialmente contra los herejes, es decir, Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney, etc. En realidad, debido al 6 de enero, no se trata simplemente de repetir mentiras, que se han normalizafas durante la administración anterior, sino sobre una insurrección en curso.
Este es en realidad el precipicio en el que nos encontramos hoy; ¿Hubo o no hubo una insurrección del 6 de enero, con la intención expresa de alterar los resultados de las elecciones de 2020? En caso afirmativo, la pregunta que debe responder el país es si el ex presidente fue su cabecilla. Esa es una respuesta fácil. En cualquier otro país, tal escenario tendría graves consecuencias. Pero el cuerpo político (no republicano) de la nación no parece querer sacudir el nido del ex presidente, tal vez por temor a una guerra civil total.
A decir la verdad, llevamos mucho tiempo en una guerra civil no declarada, aunque en realidad no se trata de que ambas partes estén comprometidas o de un simple "qué pasa". A primera vista, en realidad parece ser una rebelión misógina / supremacista blanca, con el Partido Republicano y la ideología "conservadora" proporcionando una cobertura para tal revuelta. Sus elementos principales son la oposición a los derechos civiles / humanos y el derecho al voto (leyes de supresión de votantes de Trump).
Algunos han descrito durante mucho tiempo este conflicto como una guerra de civilizaciones, mientras que otros lo han descrito como una batalla por el futuro y el alma y los ideales de la nación. Algunos simplemente lo ven como una batalla retórica sobre el significado de las palabras.
Una batalla de palabras parece ser la menor de las batallas o guerras mencionadas anteriormente y, sin embargo, ¿cómo dialoga la nación cuando un lado inventa nuevos significados para las palabras o malinterpreta las ideas y, al hacerlo, niega la realidad?
Sobre este tema, lo instructivo es la crisis de COVID; el entonces presidente le dijo a Bob Woodward que entendió desde el principio la gravedad de la pandemia, pero que la negó públicamente y continuó haciéndolo porque creía que las masas entrarían en pánico. Aparentemente, ese razonamiento puede justificar cualquier mentira, o miles de mentiras, en aras de mantener "la ley y el orden". Pero esas mentiras, o esa "estrategia", ha tenido consecuencias extremadamente mortales a medida que nos acercamos a las 600.000 muertes. Sus negaciones públicas ante la pandemia han llevado a la vacilación de las vacunas, y los republicanos / conservadores son más propensos a creer en conspiraciones de vacunas, etc., nuevamente, con las consecuencias más letales.
