Other than toilet paper, the global supply chain disruption that’s been in the news lately has generally failed to materialize, What has materialized is the global supply chain disruption of truth. This development, six years running, is exponentially more disruptive in its damage to the nation’s democratic institutions.
Behind that disruption is the nation’s former president, whose behavior has also emboldened and inspired virtually all the world’s ruthless dictators and aspiring ones, to do the same. Yet, worse than inspiring anti-democratic “strongmen,” he has inspired nearly half a nation to both, accept the normalization of lying with impunity (primarily the GOP and right wing extremists), and to also shamelessly partake in that culture of lying, without repercussion from the US judicial system.
Apparently, there is no system in place in the United States to put a Joseph Goebbels in check, under the guise of upholding democracy and defending the First Amendment. And in the case of the former president, there seems to be no system in place to thwart his anti-democratic behavior (not to mention his anti-science views), as he has a retinue of crooked lawyers, ready to litigate his infinite lies, lies that his minions willingly accept akin to blind cult followers. Additionally, his co-conspirators have also adopted this same litigious strategy with the same intent, and the same result.
The mainstream media had already been jaded by the narcissist failed businessman-turned reality star, who had a penchant for stretching the truth, embellishment and self-aggrandizement. Once he announced that he was running for president, that’s when his lies went from being a self-aggrandizing self-promoter to using all the levers of government to self-enrich himself and his family, to creating a seemingly irreversible fascist movement. He continuously got away with his daily lying without repercussion and we see the result today.
Normally, the issue of his lying would be irrelevant, but what is actually at issue here is what percentage of his followers actually believe in his lies vs. what percentage are partaking in them. More importantly, what percentage of his followers are prepared to take up arms in what appears to already be an inevitable Civil War? Yes, we are at that precipice.
Despite that, the US criminal justice system, the mainstream media and the nation’s body politic, for the most part, appear to be obsessed with gotcha politics in relation to who has been lying and who took part in the Jan. 6 “riot”? Yet they also appear to be timid in coming to a consensus that it indeed was a coup attempt. Unless that is affirmed, the ongoing insurrection will continue to gather steam and those forces, beyond the ex-president, will continue to organize and plot out their violent uprising.
At the moment, with exceptions, both the mainstream media and the US Department of Justice have been treating the Jan. 6 insurrection as but a rally turned riot that got out of control, carried out by overzealous, misguided or manipulated patriotic citizens, as opposed to what it was and continues to be; a [failed] coup attempt, which included disregarding the peoples’ popular will and subverting all the nation’s democratic institutions.
If a large part of the ex-president’s followers are simply being duped, that is actually better than the alternative: that they could care less about the truth, having convinced themselves that their insurrection is about saving what they believe to be their God-inspired and God-given republic. While many were/are religiously motivated, driven by the belief that the United States was created as an eventual heaven on earth, many of his secular followers simply believe it was created for Whites and that it must remain so in the midst of encroaching and encircling uncivilized Black and Brown hordes.
If his followers are being duped, then there’s a chance that they can be convinced about the lies, especially regarding the big one that the 2020 election was stolen, yet at this point, it appears that the nation’s polarization, as manifested in the COVID crisis, tells us that we may have already reached the point of no return.
His followers have apparently adopted a suicide bomber’s mentality, willing to wreak as much violence and bloodshed, while taking their own lives if it becomes necessary. Reaching that mindset requires committing to a cause — including following a delusional madman — as opposed to adhering to the truth or pledging loyalty to a Constitution. In that schema, lying is less than irrelevant.
That explains why Republicans continue to insist that their madman won. Neither election was even close and there is zero evidence to demonstrate otherwise. Whether they actually believe that or not is irrelevant. What it signals is that they are committed to a misogynistic and racial bigot loser who has convinced them that he alone will save their nation.
