In this particular war, it was expected that the Trompones, true to their dear leader, would support the ex-president’s bff and his expansionist policies.
What was not expected is that some or many from different parts of, including the opposite end of, the right-left political spectrum, would also make arguments that sound like apologia for the invasion of Ukraine.
Rather than the fog of war, it appears that the environment we are living in has ushered in the “smog of war.” Apologia is easy to spot, except to those engaging in it. In this war, there are those that have referred to Vladimir Putin as a world peacemaker, this while millions are fleeing Ukraine. In this environment, many analysts use their firepower, not in denouncing the invasion, but in denouncing US and NATO’s past and current policies. Nothing wrong with denouncing imperialist policies, but moral clarity requires a clear denunciation of any and all illegal and immoral invasions — as opposed to providing a smoggy moral haze — which in effect, justify invasions, in this case, Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Part of the illogical thinking — which includes some from the “left”— has to do that perhaps some are using a 1960s-1970s political lens, which permits them to virtually ignore the death and destruction, while denouncing other invasions, in effect, providing cover for Putin’s invasion. It is not clear why, other than they possibly see him as part of the “left.” If that’s what he is, why do the Trompones, who are extreme right, naturally gravitate toward Putin?
This is the “Smog Of War.”
Perhaps what we assume are qualities of the right and left and everything in-between have multiple meanings. For many, it’s not about subscribing to one political ideology or another, but rather, subscribing to a human rights ethos. In that ethos, the idea is creating a society in which everyone is viewed and treated as full human beings, with full corresponding human rights. In large part, that stems from the historical fact that this ethos has not been lived up to by most nations, including the United States.
Obviously, other ethos exist. One would think that outside of blind fanatics, most people would denounce invasions and wars, and those that engage in them, with a moral clarity that does not require the twisting of logic or facts.
During this war, virtually all sides argue that their opponents are being duped and manipulated. One thing that seems to be unclear is, where does Putin reside on the worldwide right-left political spectrum?
One thing is certain, during the Cold War, we know that the extreme right was rabidly anti-communist, i.e., anti Soviet Union, and by extension, anti-Russian. Now, it appears that much of today’s extreme right supports Putin. And, in effect, the extreme right parrots Putin’s rationale for the invasion, regurgitating his talking points, including the idea that it is the United States and NATO that are responsible for the death and destruction and the refugee crisis brought on by the invasion.
What to make of it when people on the opposite end of the political spectrum offer up the same analysis, the “they made us do it” Russian defense? As the invasion progressed and as the amount of refugees went from a few thousand to a few million, this position became untenable. So a new position was devised: “both-sidesism” crept into the “debate.”
It was both sides at fault and both sides must cut it out, ignoring the fact that it was only one side that militarily invaded a sovereign nation and that which has caused millions to become homeless.
In this conflict, some argue that the United States and NATO are pushing for World War III. Any logical mind would tell us that a nuclear war cannot be won, thus no sane person actually is pushing for WWIII.
And that seems to be the problem; it seems that there are actually only two players on the world stage who have the capacity to wage nuclear war and both seem to think nuclear war is winnable.
One of them is currently not the head of any state. And the other one, both of them actually, do not seem to comprehend the concept of Mutual Assured Destruction.
If we have now reached this nuclear precipice, what does it matter who is right? Or left?
What we do know is that a nation has been devastated and yet, it pales in terms of what a nuclear war would do to the planet. The people of Ukraine, and all peoples subjected to illegal war and invasions should be supported, while at the same time, ensuring that this conflict does not escalate to nuclear war, where everyone loses.
Perhaps the real question should be: where do these two reside on the sane-criminally insane spectrum?

Este es el “Smog de la guerra”.
Quizás lo que asumimos son cualidades de la derecha y la izquierda y todo lo que hay en el medio tiene múltiples significados. Para muchos, no se trata de suscribirse a una u otra ideología política, sino de suscribirse a un ethos de derechos humanos. En ese ethos, la idea es crear una sociedad en la que todos sean vistos y tratados como seres humanos plenos, con plenos derechos humanos correspondientes. En gran parte, eso se debe al hecho histórico de que la mayoría de las naciones, incluido Estados Unidos, no han cumplido con este ethos.
Obviamente, existen otros valores. Uno pensaría que fuera de los fanáticos ciegos, la mayoría de la gente denunciaría las invasiones y las guerras, y aquellos que se involucran en ellas, con una claridad moral que no requiere tergiversar la lógica o los hechos.
Durante esta guerra, prácticamente todos los lados argumentan que sus oponentes están siendo engañados y manipulados. Una cosa que parece no estar clara es, ¿dónde reside Putin en el espectro político mundial de derecha e izquierda?
Una cosa es cierta, durante la Guerra Fría, sabemos que la extrema derecha era rabiosamente anticomunista, es decir, anti-URSS y, por extensión, anti-rusa. Ahora, parece que gran parte de la extrema derecha de hoy apoya a Putin. Y, en efecto, la extrema derecha repite como loros la justificación de Putin para la invasión, regurgitando sus puntos de conversación, incluida la idea de que son Estados Unidos y la OTAN los responsables de la muerte, la destrucción y la crisis de refugiados provocada por la invasión.
¿Qué hacer cuando personas en el extremo opuesto del espectro político ofrecen el mismo análisis, la defensa rusa de: “nos obligaron a hacerlo”? A medida que avanzaba la invasión y la cantidad de refugiados pasó de unos pocos miles a unos millones, esta posición se volvió insostenible. Así que se ideó una nueva posición: el "ambo lados" se deslizó en el "debate".
Ambos lados tuvieron la culpa y ambos lados deben cortarlo, ignorando el hecho de que fue solo un lado el que invadió militarmente una nación soberana y que ha causado que millones se queden sin hogar.
En este conflicto, algunos argumentan que Estados Unidos y la OTAN están impulsando la Tercera Guerra Mundial. Cualquier mente lógica nos diría que no se puede ganar una guerra nuclear, por lo que ninguna persona en su sano juicio está impulsando la Tercera Guerra Mundial.
Y ese parece ser el problema; parece que en realidad solo hay dos jugadores en el escenario mundial que tienen la capacidad de librar una guerra nuclear y ambos parecen pensar que la guerra nuclear es ganable.
Uno de ellos actualmente no es el jefe de ningún estado. Y el otro, ambos en realidad, no parecen comprender el concepto de Destrucción Mutua Asegurada.
Si ya hemos llegado a este precipicio nuclear, ¿qué importa quiénes derechista? ¿O izquierdista?
Lo que sí sabemos es que una nación ha sido devastada y, sin embargo, palidece en términos de lo que una guerra nuclear le haría al planeta. El pueblo de Ucrania y todos los pueblos sometidos a guerras e invasiones ilegales deben recibir apoyo y, al mismo tiempo, garantizar que este conflicto no se convierta en una guerra nuclear, donde todos pierden.
Quizás la verdadera pregunta debería ser: ¿dónde residen estos dos en el espectro sano-(criminalmente) loco?
