On June 12, 1987, Ronald Reagan went to Berlin and uttered these famous words to Mikhail Gorbachev: “Tear down this wall.”
In regards to the illegally funded US/Mexico wall, what is good for the goose, ought to be good for the gander.
The question is, will the incoming Biden-Harris administration dismantle the wall on its own, or will it require a mass movement to bring it down?
To Mexican and Central American peoples, the US/Mexico border wall will always symbolize the lawlessness of the disgraced madman and his white supremacy appeals for its construction. When he leaves office, he will have replaced pre-existing fences to the tune of 400 miles, with only a few miles constituting new construction. For the most part, against Congress’s will, he illegally diverted close to $20 billion, most of it from the military budget, this after having promised that Mexico would foot the bill.
Given this recent ugly history, which includes separating families and putting children in cages and his attempts to dismantle DACA, it is not unreasonable for the Mexican/Central American origin populations, and other migrant communities of this country, to demand that Biden-Harris begin the process of dismantling the wall. This history has included a wall fundraising scam by Steve Bannon & Co, which has resulted in criminal charges against him and his co-conspirators of siphoning off the $25 million they raised for personal use.
This abhorrence of this monument can be extended to all peoples of the Americas and the world over, actually. And the important thing to note here is that the moral case against the wall has already been made.
The wall is akin to monuments to slavery and the Confederacy. Who will ever forget the 2017 White supremacist torch-led march to defend the Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville, Virginia, which resulted in the death of Heather Heyer. This was amid “The Jews will not replace us” chants. This is also when the White House occupant, rather than denounce White supremacy, gave his famous “there are fine peoples on both sides” line.
The wall is also akin to statues in honor to conquistadors, such as Columbus, Cortez, Pizarro and Oñate, many of which came down during the fall of 2020, after the felling of many Confederate statues after the May 24 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minn.
But given the new administration, why is there doubt or ambiguity on this matter?
Because recent history has shown us that people of color are always warred upon and also taken for granted by this nation’s body politic.
There is no comparison between a fascist president and the incoming administration, on virtually all matters. However, on immigration issues, outside of DACA and the targeting of criminal suspects, the Obama-Biden administration did not have a great record to stand on.
Admittedly, Biden-Harris are already putting forth a better face on this topic, but because of that prior legacy, it will not be enough to freeze policies; they must reverse them.
Indeed, they have already given positive signals regarding the children in cages and the reunification of the separated children and also, a better future for DACA, etc. But to be remembered is that what incoming administration websites promise, is not always the same thing that incoming administrations do. We already know that the Hope and Change administration that promised comprehensive immigration reform, did not come through. Instead, it created an unprecedented deportation machine.
As such, that is why the incoming administration has to prove itself to these communities, that contrary to the mainstream media tropes that they had jumped ship, they overwhelmingly backed the blue ticket in this 2020 election between the 70th-80th percentile, forming part of a giant blue wall on the West Coast and the Southwest.
These communities should not have to wait 150 years for the government to acknowledge that walls are an insult to human dignity and that the attack against Mexican /Central American peoples and migrants constitute classic dehumanization.
If the wall were to remain standing, it will be a reminder of that ride down that escalator in which the madman first decided to attack Mexicans and migrants while launching his 2016 presidential campaign. It will also be a reminder that those attacks caused hardly a whimper among the body politic nor the mainstream media. Had he attacked any other group, presumably that would have doomed his campaign before he and his immigrant wife had reached the escalator’s last step. That failure arguably is what emboldened him to continue with his hate-driven agenda.
Now, with the madman roundly rejected, history compels Biden-Harris to dismantle that monument to fear, hate, xenophobia and the nation’s perennial anti-Mexicanism. Besides, it represents the antithesis of everything they purportedly believe in.
Incidentally, the Berlin Wall did eventually come down in 1989.

En lo que respecta al muro de Estados Unidos / México financiado ilegalmente, lo que es bueno para uno, es Bueno para el otro.
La pregunta es, ¿la administración entrante de Biden-Harris desmantelará el muro por sí sola o requerirá un movimiento de masas para derribarlo?
Para los pueblos Mexicanos y Centroamericanos, el muro fronterizo entre Estados Unidos y México siempre simbolizará la anarquía del loco caído en desgracia y su supremacía blanca apela a su construcción. Cuando deje el cargo, habrá reemplazado las cercas preexistentes por una suma de 400 millas, y solo unas pocas millas constituirán una nueva construcción. En su mayor parte, en contra de la voluntad del Congreso, desvió ilegalmente cerca de $ 20 mil millones, la mayor parte del presupuesto militar, esto después de haber prometido que México pagaría la cuenta.
Dada esta reciente y fea historia, que incluye separar familias y poner niños en jaulas y sus intentos de desmantelar DACA, no es descabellado que las poblaciones de origen Mexicano / Centroamericano y otras comunidades migrantes de este país exijan que Biden-Harris comience el proceso de desmantelamiento de la pared. Esta historia ha incluido una estafa de recaudación de fondos en el muro por parte del ultraderechista Steve Bannon & Co, que ha resultado en cargos criminales contra él y sus co-conspiradores de desviar los $ 25 millones que recaudaron para uso personal.
Este aborrecimiento de este monumento puede extenderse a todos los pueblos de las Américas y del mundo, de hecho. Y lo importante a tener en cuenta aquí es que el caso moral contra el muro ya se ha hecho.
El muro es similar a los monumentos a la esclavitud y la Confederación. ¿Quién olvidará la marcha de 2017 encabezada por la antorcha supremacista blanca para defender la estatua de Robert E. Lee en Charlottesville, Virginia, que resultó en la muerte de Heather Heyer? Esto fue en medio de cánticos de "Los judíos no nos reemplazarán". Esto es también cuando el ocupante de la Casa Blanca, en lugar de denunciar la supremacía blanca, dio su famosa línea de "hay gente buena en ambos lados".
El muro también es similar a las estatuas en honor a los conquistadores, como Colón, Cortés, Pizarro y Oñate, muchas de las cuales cayeron durante el otoño de 2020 en Los Estados Unidos, luego de la tala de muchas estatuas confederadas después del asesinato de George Floyd el 24 de mayo en Minneapolis, Minn.
Pero dada la nueva administración, ¿por qué hay dudas o ambigüedad al respecto?
Porque la historia reciente nos ha demostrado que las personas de color en Los Estados Unidos siempre están en guerra y también las da por sentado el organismo político de esta nación. No hay comparación entre un presidente fascista y la administración entrante, en prácticamente todos los asuntos.
Sin embargo, en cuestiones de inmigración, fuera de DACA y el objetivo de presuntos delincuentes, la administración Obama-Biden no tenía un gran historial en el que apoyarse.
Es cierto que Biden-Harris ya está presentando una mejor cara sobre este tema, pero debido a ese legado anterior, no será suficiente para congelar las políticas; deben revertirlos. De hecho, ya han dado señales positivas con respecto a los niños en jaulas y la reunificación de los niños separados y también, un futuro mejor para DACA, etc. Pero hay que recordar que lo que prometen los sitios web de la administración entrante, no siempre es lo mismo que las administraciones entrantes lo hacen.
Ya sabemos que la administración de Obama-Biden de la Esperanza y Cambio (Hope and Change) que prometió una reforma migratoria integral, no se cumplió. En cambio, creó una máquina de deportación sin precedentes.
Como tal, es por eso que la administración entrante tiene que demostrar su valía ante estas comunidades, que contrariamente a los tropos de los principales medios de comunicación que habían abandonado el barco, respaldaron abrumadoramente el boleto azul (los Democrátas) en esta elección de 2020 entre el percentil 70 y 80, formando parte de una pared azul gigante en la costa oeste y el suroeste. Estas comunidades no deberían tener que esperar 150 años para que el gobierno reconozca que los muros son un insulto a la dignidad humana y que el ataque contra los pueblos y migrantes Mexicano / Centroamericanos constituye una deshumanización clásica.
Si el muro permaneciera en pie, sería un recordatorio de ese viaje por esa escalera mecánica en la que el loco decidió atacar por primera vez a Mexicanos y migrantes mientras lanzaba su campaña presidencial de 2016.
También será un recordatorio de que esos ataques apenas provocaron un quejido entre el cuerpo político ni tampoco los principales medios de comunicación. Si hubiera atacado a cualquier otro grupo, presumiblemente eso habría condenado su campaña antes de que él y su esposa inmigrante hubieran llegado al último escalón de la escalera mecánica.
Podría decirse que ese fracaso es lo que lo animó a continuar con su agenda impulsada por el odio. Ahora, con el loco rechazado rotundamente, la historia obliga a Biden-Harris a desmantelar ese monumento al miedo, el odio, la xenofobia y el perenne anti-Mexicanismo de la nación. Además, representa la antítesis de todo en lo que supuestamente creen.
Por cierto, el Muro de Berlín finalmente cayó en 1989.
