Bring Down the Damn Wall, Now!

Right before the previous occupant of the White House lifted off to Mar-A-Lago, he bragged, as though he had something to do with it, that the number of COVID cases would soon be “skyrocketing downward.”

Aside from not acknowledging the 400K deaths under his watch during the pandemic, he used a metaphor that more aptly describes his tenure, especially his last days in office.

Now, for the first 100 days, everything will either seem to be momentous or historic. Beyond the impeachment trial and probable indictments and lawsuits against him, there will be all the other trials stemming from the Jan. 6 white supremacist insurrection at the Capitol. This while President Joe Biden will be focused on getting the pandemic under control. At the same time, he will also be busy weeding out the corruption left over from the previous administration. Also, many of the initial 17 executive orders that Biden has signed, in effect, will be rollbacks of everything destructive that the previous occupant laid to waste, from environmental regulations, work, health and safety standards, civil rights protections, racialized and dehumanizing immigration, educational, economic and racial justice policies.

After five years on non-stop misogyny and racial hate, all that is welcome and it feels like that giant toxic political cloud hanging over the country is finally lifting.

However, the one rollback that we should not expect from this administration is the tearing down of that US/Mexico border wall, constructed with misappropriated funds. Pausing the building of the wall and on deportations, is not enough. For lots of people, that’s a red line, or a brown line. Unless the wall comes down, the calls for unity and healing, will be worthless.

Until it comes down, it will always be the ultimate symbol, not of punishing immigration policies, but of fascism and tyranny itself. It will always be a reminder. For five years, it was his predecessor’s promise and signature “accomplishment.” Unquestionably, his hate-driven ‘build the wall’ chant was always pleasing to his xenophobic, misogynistic and white supremacist base – while falsely promising that Mexico would pay for it. His words were not so much stinging and arrogant as they were dehumanizing.

Pretty much everything he did was dehumanizing toward one sector of society or another. But the other reminder of the wall’s context was his escalator ride down his own tower when he denigrated Mexican peoples and migrants, this while announcing his candidacy. If the US body politic had soundly rejected him at that moment, the nation may have been spared five years of his racial and misogynist diatribes and his corrupt misrule. Instead, he was given a pass, with nary a protest from the nation’s body politic. Then there was family separation and the caging of children, the Muslim travel ban and his war against “shithole” countries — all of which in one form or another were: crimes against humanity.

When the Berlin Wall came down, it was symbolic, and yet it actually and eventually led to the reunification of West and East Germany. More than that, it also led to the end of the Cold War. Not to be forgotten is that it was people power that actually brought the wall down, one sledgehammer at a time. While it stood, a little more than 300 East Germans died attempting to cross the wall whereas some 5,000 were apprehended while trying to do so.

Unbeknownst to most people, more than 10,000 people, primarily of Mexican and Central American descent have died since 1994, when NAFTA was signed. And most of these deaths could have been prevented but for intentional governmental policies intended to drive them into the most inhospitable parts of the border, including through deserts, mountains and rivers. Fences and walls have been a part of that strategy for decades, but most especially under the previous president, including what is now 400-miles of wall.

Now that President Biden has signed an executive order that halts construction of the wall, it is  welcome, but not enough. Precisely because he has historically been a centrist politician, it is not expected that the tearing down of the wall will come from his administration. At the same time, with the signing of the first 17 executive orders, he appears to have begun with a progressive agenda, due primarily to pressure from his progressive base, representing segments of society, that suffered disproportionately from his predecessor’s reactionary agenda.

Yet, even for his progressive base, the knocking down of the wall may perhaps not be “the right time.”  Because the wall is about the character of a nation, there should be no compromise on this matter precisely because, as the new president says, it is the decent thing to do. If not, it will indeed take people power to knock down that monument to white supremacy.

¡Derriba el Maldito Muro, Ahora!

Justo antes de que el anterior ocupante de la Casa Blanca se fuera a Mar-A-Lago, se presumió, como si tuviera algo que ver con eso, de que el número de casos COVID pronto "dispararía como un cohete hacia abajo".

Aparte de no reconocer las muertes de 400 mil bajo su vigilancia durante la pandemia, utilizó una metáfora que describe más acertadamente su permanencia en la Casa Blanca, especialmente sus últimos días en el cargo.

Ahora, durante los primeros 100 días, todo parecerá ser trascendental o histórico. Más allá del juicio por acusación y las probables acusaciones y demandas en su contra, habrá todos los demás juicios derivados de la insurrección supremacista blanca del 6 de enero en el Capitolio. Esto mientras el presidente Joe Biden se centrará en controlar la pandemia. Al mismo tiempo, también estará ocupado des hiciéndose de la corrupción sobrante de la administración anterior. Además, muchas de las 30 órdenes ejecutivas iniciales que Biden ha firmado, en efecto, serán retrocesos de todo lo destructivo que el ocupante anterior desperdició, desde regulaciones ambientales, normas de trabajo, salud y seguridad, protecciones de derechos civiles, políticas de inmigración racializadas y deshumanizadoras, educativas, económicas y de justicia racial.

Después de cinco años sobre la misoginia y el odio racial sin parar, todo eso es bienvenido y parece que esa gigantesca nube política tóxica que pende sobre el país finalmente se está levantando.

Sin embargo, la única reversión que no debemos esperar de esta administración es el derribo de ese muro fronterizo de Estados Unidos y México, construido con fondos apropiados indebidamente. Detener el edificio de la muralla y las deportaciones, no es suficiente. Para mucha gente, es una línea roja o una línea de color de bronce. A menos que el muro se desmete, los llamados a la unidad y a la curación no valdrán nada.

Hasta que no baje, siempre será el símbolo último, no de castigar las políticas de inmigración, sino del fascismo y la tiranía en sí. Siempre será un recordatorio. Durante cinco años, fue la promesa y el "logro" característico de su predecesor. Indudablemente, su canto de "construir el muro" impulsado por el odio siempre fue agradable a su base xenófoba, misógina y supremacista blanca, mientras que prometió falsamente que México pagaría por ello. Sus palabras no eran tan estaduras y arrogantes como deshumanizadoras.

Casi todo lo que hacía era deshumanizar hacia un sector de la sociedad u otro. Pero el otro recordatorio del contexto del muro fue su viaje a las escaleras mecánicas por su propia torre cuando denigraba a los pueblos y migrantes y Mexicanos, esto mientras anunciaba su candidatura. Si el cuerpo político Estadounidense lo hubiera rechazado en ese momento, la nación pudo haberse salvado de cinco años de sus diatribas raciales y misóginas y su desgobierno corrupto. En cambio, se le dio un pase, sin ninguna protesta del cuerpo político de la nación. Luego estaba la separación familiar y el encajonado de niños, la prohibición de viajar Musulmana y su guerra contra los países "agujeros de mierda", todos los cuales de una forma u otra eran: crímenes contra la humanidad.

Cuando el Muro de Berlín bajó, fue simbólico, y sin embargo, en realidad y eventualmente condujo a la reunificación de Alemania Occidental y Oriental. Más que eso, también condujo al final de la Guerra Fría. No hay que olvidar que fue el poder de la gente el que realmente derribó la pared, un mazo a la vez. Mientras estaba, un poco más de 300 alemanes orientales murieron intentando cruzar el muro, mientras que unos 5.000 fueron detenidos mientras intentaban hacerlo.

Sin saberlo la mayoría de la gente, mucho más de 10.000 personas, principalmente de ascendencia Mexicana y Centroamericana, han muerto desde 1994, cuando se firmó el TLCAN. Y la mayoría de estas muertes podrían haberse evitado, pero por políticas gubernamentales intencionales destinadas a conducirlas a las partes más inhóspitas de la frontera, incluso a través de desiertos, montañas y ríos. Las cercas y los muros han sido parte de esa estrategia durante décadas, pero sobre todo bajo el anterior presidente, incluyendo lo que ahora es 450 millas de muro.

Ahora que el presidente Biden ha firmado una orden ejecutiva que detiene la construcción del muro, es bienvenido, pero no suficiente. Precisamente porque históricamente ha sido un político centrista, no se espera que el derribo del muro provenga de su administración. Al mismo tiempo, con la firma de las primeras 30 órdenes ejecutivas, parece haber comenzado con una agenda progresiva, debido principalmente a la presión de su base progresista, representando a segmentos de la sociedad, que sufrió desproporcionadamente de la agenda reaccionaria de su predecesor.

Sin embargo, incluso para su base progresista, el derribo de la pared tal vez no sea "el momento adecuado".  Debido a que el muro tiene que ver con el carácter de una nación, no debería haber ningún compromiso sobre este asunto precisamente porque, como dice el nuevo presidente, es lo decente que hay que hacer. Si no, se necesitará poder de la gente para derribar ese monumento a la supremacía blanca.
