English language rules continue to baffle me pretty much the same as when I first attended Kindergarten in East LA, a time when the English language was completely foreign to me. It is no longer foreign to me, though actually, what’s baffling is not so much the language, but how it is employed by politicians, including by those that have defended the Jan 6, 2021 failed coup, though this isn’t something new. For example, Tricky Dick left office proclaiming: “I am not a crook,” which meant he was a scoundrel … and a crook.
Another example: former President Ronald Reagan decimated Central America and Africa in the 1980s by supporting right wing mercenaries, aka “freedom fighters,” leaving many hundreds of thousands of non-combatants dead in their wake. Surprisingly, even liberals nowadays look fondly upon his rule, wishing that today’s Republican leaders were more like him… conveniently forgetting the million-plus casualties from those “secret” wars.
Weapons of Mass Destruction: Who can forget Baby Bush and his war cabinet that lied the country into illegally invading Iraq, leaving many hundreds of thousands dead, under the pretext of pre-emptive war to destroy Iraq, due to those nonexistent weapons. Rather than face war crimes tribunals, they are now celebrities.
The Genius of the Founding Fathers: As a kid, I learned about the Constitution, suffrage and “all men are created equal,” only to find that that only applied to white male landowners, many of whom were slave owners. From what I gather, the same thing remains true today in regards to “Democracy” and “Justice for all.” Not genius.
Alternative facts: Kellyanne Conway should also have added alternative universes to her cockamamie contribution to democracy. The seeming goal of that alternate reality was to protect the-then president, especially in all his grifting and criminal activities.
Admittedly, after 30,000 lies by the then-president, his cult followers had long been primed for “the big lie,” despite all the obvious evidence. In this alternate universe, he had plenty of enablers, especially his spokespeople, from Spicey to Huckabee Sanders to McNutty, though none could approximate Conway’s regular and alternative nonsense. Well, perhaps Steve Bannon could. The “lamestream” press, as the Orangeman and his minions like to call it, as “the enemy of the people,” was the ultimate nail in the coffin that would prompt his supporters never to be exposed to honest and truthful views. We could also add all his Congressional cultists, who denounced him on Jan 6, 2021, yet continue to be his staunchest defenders, such as Kevin McCarthy.
Rule of law: You will not find the ex-president’s name under this entry, nor under “election integrity.”
Regarding my original point. I still grapple with certain English words and expressions that make no sense at all, such as:
Un-American, anti-American and “the enemy within”: Apparently, they apply to people who disagree with the ex-pres and who oppose oppression and exploitation in all their forms.
Ordinary people: These are ruthless lawbreakers that are deemed ordinary if they agree with the ex-pres, his lies and his immoral lifestyle.
Foreign and domestic enemies: Seems like those are permanent categories for people of color.
Original intent. This means the Supremes interpreting laws that permit the denial of human rights to the majority, while ensuring white apartheid rule.
Second amendment rights: The “freedom” to own and use, not muskets, but modern military armaments, including stinger missiles and probably nukes too.
Right to life: The right to birth. After that, babies, children and adults can go to hell.
Thoughts and prayers: This is also served with a side [of] moment of silence, after all mass shootings.
You cannot legislate away evil: A statement regularly made by NRA-bought politicians, though resigning would be a good start.
America First. Naziesque slogan. Still trying to figure out who is second.
MAGA: A return to an idyllic American past when dejure and defacto segregation and discrimination were the norm. See “original intent.”
A perfect phone call: The ex-president had a penchant for repeatedly making such calls (read criminal), including one to Georgia official Brad Raffensperger, to find 11,800 votes to overturn the Georgia presidential election.
You will not replace us. But didn’t they already replace us (at least their ancestors have repeatedly tried)?
Identity politics: When white is the official identity and all others are unwanted, foreigners or disposables.
Teaching American history: This one means ignoring thousands of years of Indigenous history and also ignoring the teaching of genocide, land theft, discrimination and slavery. And how about those Texas educators wanting to teach about “involuntary relocation” as opposed to slavery?
And finally, after 9-11, Baby Bush invoked the notion of protecting “the Homeland,” which is incomprehensible and a headscratcher, as the US sits atop Indigenous lands.

Las reglas del idioma inglés continúan desconcertándome casi igual que cuando asistí por primera vez al jardín de infantes en el este de Los Ángeles, una época en que el idioma inglés era completamente extraño para mí. Ya no me resulta extraño, aunque en realidad, lo desconcertante no es tanto el lenguaje, sino cómo lo emplean los políticos, incluidos los que han defendido el golpe fallido del 6 de enero de 2021, aunque esto no es algo nuevo. Armas de destrucción masiva: ¿Quién puede olvidar a Baby Bush y su gabinete de guerra que mintieron al país para que invadiera Irak ilegalmente, dejando cientos de miles de muertos, bajo el pretexto de una guerra preventiva para destruir Irak, debido a esas armas inexistentes? En lugar de enfrentarse a los tribunales de crímenes de guerra, ahora son famosos y siguen libres.
El genio de los “padres fundadores”: cuando era niño, aprendí sobre la Constitución, el sufragio y que “todos los hombres son creados iguales”, solo para descubrir que eso solo se aplicaba a los terratenientes varones blancos, muchos de los cuales eran dueños de esclavos. Derechos de la segunda enmienda: la “libertad” de poseer y usar, no mosquetes, sino armamento militar moderno, incluidos misiles Stinger y probablemente también armas nucleares.
Derecho a la vida: El derecho al nacimiento. Después de eso, según los derechistas, los bebés, los niños y los adultos pueden irse al infierno.
