The congenital lying ex-president and his minions are a sight to behold. Without question, he is the most corrupt and criminal con man that has ever put on a political suit. And his countless minions, who shall remain shameless, rose and have risen to his level of immorality and criminality. This is while they worked for him when he was in office and even now, in the post years, as he attempts to once again become the resident and permanent evil of the White House.
An even worse sight are his fawning cult-like violent supporters.
What explains his rise to power and his attractiveness to a significant segment of the population that appears loyal to him, regardless of how many lies he has told (30,000+ while he was grifter in chief), and regardless of the countless crimes he has committed, which includes a failed coup attempt?
The answer is and has always been “hidden in plain sight.”
For many, it is tempting to say that his supporters are just plain stupid, unable to discern the con man’s lies or the lies of his minions. Sure, there must be a few of those that are gullible and have fallen prey to his lies and conspiracy theories, but something else is at work here because that does not adequately describe the MAGA or Make America Great Again movement.
What’s more sinister is that his supporters are Ok and comfortable with him and his slime ball minions because he is their liar, their con man, their leader and for some, their man that was chosen from above, to both preserve their mythic view of America and who will bring about heaven on earth.
In other words, his supporters believe they are engaged in an existential war, pitting the forces of good versus the forces of evil. It’s an epic struggle, but it is also a racial struggle, one that on this continent, literally began in 1492. Civilization versus barbarism. The West versus the unChristian world.
But how does one, especially Christians, reconcile supporting perhaps the most unChristian president and ex-president ever? The easy answer: abortion and Roe v. Wade. That is the epitome of a “Faustian bargain” or deal with the devil. Can it even be referred to as irony that right wing Christians support a man who as a candidate, bragged of his sexual exploits with unmarried and married women?
And it is not like he hid his brazen immorality and his griftiness. But that only explains his right-wing Christian support. What of those conservatives who made “law and order” their entire raison d’ėtre? It boggles the mind that they would support someone who does not appear to have done or said anything legal or moral in his entire time in office and even now as his coup attempt has not actually ended. To be remembered is that the stain of being a 5-time draft-dodger shades the notion that he was/is pro-military. He was never a conscientious objector; he was and has always been but a privileged coward. And the Jan 6 (ongoing) coup attempt also is a reminder that his unwavering support of law enforcement has always been but another fraudulent Faustian bargain.
Are the rest of his supporters indeed stupid brainless dupes? Simply robotic cultists? One could be tempted into thinking that because of their irrational thinking and behavior. However, the con man did not create them. They already existed. Not to be forgotten is the racial component of his followers; the vast majority are White and many if not most are outwardly and blatantly racist and White supremacists. Again, they already existed and have always existed throughout US history; it is just that the ex-president validated their views and made them once again proud to hold misogynist White supremacist views in public.
One could interpret his movement as being embedded and guided by the broader notion of “original intent.” Beyond interpreting the Constitution conservatively — which permitted and condoned genocide, land theft, slavery, discrimination and structural misogyny — their idea of original intent is the belief that God gave Europeans the Americas so as to civilize and Christianize it.
The MAGA movement arguably already existed even before the founding of this nation. MAGA simply needed a figurehead. One can clearly see its modern roots in the John Birch Society - not to mention the advent of Neo Nazis, etc, but also in the White supremacist militia movement beginning in the 1980s, fueled by right wing radio from that era. The difference today is that they also now have right-wing TV and right-wing social media.
In a nutshell, whatever the ex-president does or says will never deter the right wing because they believe themselves to already be in the throes of an existential battle.
It’s a civil war, stupid.

El expresidente mentiroso congénito y sus secuaces son un espectáculo para la vista. Sin duda, es el estafador más corrupto y criminal que jamás se haya puesto un traje político. Y sus innumerables secuaces, que permanecerán desvergonzados, se levantaron y se han elevado a su nivel de inmoralidad y criminalidad. Esto es mientras trabajaban para él cuando estaba en el cargo e incluso ahora, en los años posteriores, mientras intenta convertirse una vez más en el mal residente y permanente de la Casa Blanca.
Una vista aún peor son sus aduladores seguidores de culto.
¿Qué explica su ascenso al poder y su atractivo para un segmento significativo y armado de la población que parece leal a él, independientemente de cuántas mentiras haya dicho (más de 30 000 mientras era estafador en jefe), e independientemente de los innumerables crímenes que haya cometido? , que incluye un intento de golpe de estado fallido?
La respuesta está y siempre ha estado “oculta a plena vista”.
Para muchos, es tentador decir que sus partidarios son simplemente estúpidos, incapaces de discernir las mentiras del estafador o las mentiras de sus secuaces. Claro, debe haber algunos de los que son crédulos y han sido víctimas de sus mentiras y teorías de conspiración, pero aquí hay algo más en juego porque eso no describe adecuadamente el movimiento MAGA o Make America Great Again.
Lo que es más siniestro es que sus seguidores están bien y se sienten cómodos con él y sus secuaces de bola de baba porque él es su mentiroso, su estafador, su líder y, para algunos, su hombre que fue elegido desde arriba, tanto para preservar su visión mítica de Estados Unidos y quien traerá el cielo a la tierra.
En otras palabras, sus seguidores creen que están involucrados en una guerra existencial, enfrentando las fuerzas del bien contra las fuerzas del mal. Es una lucha épica, pero también es una lucha racial, que en este continente comenzó literalmente en 1492. Civilización versus barbarie. Occidente contra el mundo no cristiano.
Pero, ¿cómo puede uno, especialmente los cristianos, conciliar el apoyo quizás al presidente y ex presidente menos cristiano de todos los tiempos? La respuesta fácil: aborto y Roe v. Wade. Ese es el epítome de un “trato faustiano” o trato con el diablo. ¿Puede incluso considerarse una ironía que los cristianos de derecha apoyen a un hombre que, como candidato, se jactó de sus hazañas sexuales con mujeres solteras y casadas?
Y no es que escondiera su descarada inmoralidad y sus robos. Pero eso solo explica su apoyo cristiano de derecha. ¿Qué hay de esos conservadores que hicieron de la “ley y el orden” toda su razón de ser? Es alucinante que apoyarían a alguien que no parece haber hecho o dicho nada legal o moral en todo su tiempo en el cargo e incluso ahora que su intento de golpe de estado no ha terminado. Hay que recordar que la mancha de haber sido evasor del servicio militar en cinco ocasiones sombrea la noción de que era/es promilitar. Nunca fue objetor de conciencia; fue y ha sido siempre un cobarde privilegiado. Y el intento de golpe del 6 de enero (que continúa) también es un recordatorio de que su apoyo inquebrantable a la aplicación de la ley siempre ha sido otro trato faustiano fraudulento.
¿Son el resto de sus seguidores realmente estúpidos tontos sin cerebro? ¿Simplemente cultistas robóticos? Uno podría verse tentado a pensar eso debido a su pensamiento y comportamiento irracionales. Sin embargo, el estafador no los creó. Ya existían. No hay que olvidar el componente racial de sus seguidores; la gran mayoría son blancos y muchos, si no la mayoría, son exterior y descaradamente racistas y supremacistas blancos. Nuevamente, ya existieron y siempre han existido a lo largo de la historia de los EE. UU.; es solo que el ex presidente validó sus puntos de vista y los hizo una vez más orgullosos de tener puntos de vista misóginos de supremacía blanca en público.
Uno podría interpretar su movimiento como incrustado y guiado por la noción más amplia de “intención original”. Más allá de interpretar la Constitución de manera conservadora - que permitió y condonó el genocidio, el robo de tierras, la esclavitud, la discriminación y la misoginia estructural - su idea de intención original es la creencia de que Dios les dio a los europeos las Américas para civilizarlas y cristianizarlas.
Podría decirse que el movimiento MAGA ya existía incluso antes de la fundación de esta nación. MAGA simplemente necesitaba una figura decorativa. Uno puede ver claramente sus raíces modernas en la John Birch Society, sin mencionar el advenimiento de los neonazis, etc., sino también en el movimiento de milicias supremacistas blancas que comenzó en la década de 1980, impulsado por la radio de derecha de esa época. La diferencia hoy es que ahora también tienen televisión derechista y redes sociales derechistas.
