Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has laid down his 2024 presidential gauntlet by insisting that his principal theme will hinge on the question of “what it means to be an American.” The indicted ex-president, the “Most innocent Man in History,” thinks his retread Make America Great Again version is superior.
Truthfully, DeSantis thinks his “Keep America Ignorant” version is even better; one that harkens back to the 1950s. Both actually, harken back to the 1500s, though despite the GOP rallying to the ex-president’s defense, DeSantis is actually still more dangerous.
Historically, when that question has arisen, its definitions have been used to place People of Color and immigrants outside of the national imagination (the rise of anti-Asian hate is directly attributable to the ex-president’s xenophobia) while also erasing genocide, land theft, mass rape and slavery in terms of its national formation and identity.
DeSantis’s definition requires extreme censorship, which would result in the teaching of a Lily White US history. That may be the defining question for the 2024 presidential election. However, it’s the wrong question as it alludes to whiteness and American exceptionalism.
The question should be: what does it mean to be an American within the context of what it means to be a human being? His assumption is that the most important thing to teach is a rose-colored version of American history. That means white-scrubbing from history books this nation’s roots and founding, which also includes hundreds of years of dehumanization and the resultant de jure and de facto discrimination and segregation.
As such, the logical question is, why do Americans need to continuously be spoon-fed that same narrative of being God-chosen and being the hope for humanity? Because Johnny and Mary do not need to know about the blood-drenched history of this continent and instead need to know that God continues to command Americans to bring heaven on earth, while, if injecting the ex-president into this conversation, profiting from this “Mission from God.”
However, this is where DeSantis steps in; a purportedly more sane and savvy media proponent, of the same fascistic objectives of the obviously insane ex-president, without the obvious family grifting, while being more “competent” and not as delusional nor narcissistic. But more dangerous? How low the bar?
Truthfully, DeSantis embodies the All-American values of American exceptionalism and American supremacy [read White Supremacy]. Though his values go beyond his racial lenses. He is proudly the antithesis of progressive; he stands against a woman’s right to choose. He is also for unfettered gun rights, regardless of the amount of massacres of school children. He also promotes censorship in the classroom, on matters of race (CRT), gender and “pronouns.” Media censorship is also one of his pillars that he believes will get him to the promised land. All this is his idea of standing up to woke … “Florida, where woke comes to die.”
Perhaps he and the GOP, not to mention the madman ex-president, have not been paying attention; those are all minority stances in this country and arguably what cost the GOP the last two elections. Their great [White] hope is but a slippery slope to extinction, unless they can cheat or coup de tat their way back into power. Even that may not be their goal. A bloody civil war would suit them just fine, as they’ve been arming themselves for a generation.
DeSantis is actually very little different from the madman, except for being a tad more sane. Most of the GOP is also not far from the madman, who last cast himself not simply as a wannabe authoritarian, but as a GOP rejected Biblical character. In announcing his reelection bid, he said that aside from being their voice:
“I am your warrior. I am your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed: I am your retribution.”
A few days later, he followed that up by threatening “death and destruction” if he is indicted. He indeed has been indicted and possibly three more times. GOP politics have descended to tragicomedy. And the MAGA-heads, but especially the evangelicals, actually take this “Final Battle” stuff seriously.
The lament by the few sane conservatives left is, Where are the Reagan-Bush Repubs? which is priceless. To be an American is to be an amnesiac. That’s the presidential team that illegally caused many hundreds of thousands of casualties in both Central America and Africa in secret wars during their tenure. And then there’s Baby Bush and his war cabinet who should all be rotting in Guantanamo Bay, for the same crimes in their illegal war against Iraq.
But back to DeSantis’s version of what it means to be an American. Yes. Back to the past. Perhaps he will bring back the brown bag test? Or literacy tests - which most Repubs would fail. Back to the Future.

A decir verdad, DeSantis encarna los valores estadounidenses del excepcionalismo estadounidense y la supremacía estadounidense [léase Supremacía blanca]. Aunque sus valores van más allá de sus lentes raciales. Es orgullosamente la antítesis del progresismo; se opone al derecho de la mujer a elegir. También está a favor de los derechos de armas sin restricciones, independientemente de la cantidad de masacres de niños en edad escolar. También promueve la censura en las aulas, en cuestiones de raza (CRT), género y “pronombres”. La censura de la prensa también es uno de sus pilares que cree que lo llevarán a la tierra prometida. Tal vez él y el Partido Republicano, por no hablar del expresidente loco, no han estado prestando atención; todas esas son posturas minoritarias en este país y posiblemente lo que le costó al Partido Republicano las dos últimas elecciones. Su gran esperanza [blanca] no es más que una pendiente resbaladiza hacia la extinción, a menos que puedan hacer trampa o hacer un golpe de Estado en su camino de regreso al poder. Incluso ese puede no ser su objetivo. Una guerra civil sangrienta les vendría bien, ya que se han estado armando durante una generación.
DeSantis es en realidad muy poco diferente del loco expresidente, excepto por ser un poco más cuerdo. La mayor parte del Partido Republicano tampoco está lejos del loco expresidente, que por última vez se presentó no solo como un aspirante a autoritario, sino como un personaje bíblico rechazado por el Partido Republicano. Al anunciar su candidatura a la reelección, dijo que además de ser su voz:
“Soy tu guerrero. Soy tu justicia. Y para aquellos que han sido agraviados y traicionados: yo soy tu retribución”.
Unos días después, siguió amenazando con “muerte y destrucción” si es acusado. De hecho, ha sido acusado y posiblemente 3 veces más. La política republicana ha descendido a la tragicomedia. Y los MAGAheads - seguidores del expresidente - pero especialmente los evangélicos, realmente se toman en serio este tema de la “Batalla Final”.
El lamento de los pocos conservadores cuerdos que quedan es: ¿Dónde están los Repúblicanos, seguidores de Reagan-Bush? - cual pregunta no tiene precio. Ser estadounidense es ser amnésico. Ese es el equipo presidencial que causó ilegalmente muchos, cientos de miles de bajas tanto en América Central como en África en guerras no tan secretas durante su mandato. Y luego está Baby Bush y su gabinete de guerra, quienes deberían estar pudriéndose en la Bahía de Guantánamo de por vida, por los mismos crímenes en su guerra ilegal contra Irak.
Pero volvamos a la versión de DeSantis de lo que significa ser estadounidense. Sí. Volver al pasado ¿Quizás traerá de vuelta la prueba de la bolsa café? O pruebas de alfabetización, que la mayoría de los Republicanos fallarían. Regreserán al futuro.
